Tabukuta Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia

“This community is situated about 11km south east of Brikama town via the Silety road. It is a predominantly Mandinka tribe community with some Fula and Wollof tribes all living harmoniously. The community has expanded over the past decade partly due to the mass migration of people from southern Senegalese region of Cassamance. This has some economic significance for the community by growing groundnut and millet for subsistence farming thereby helping in combating hunger especially during the rainy season. However, this has also resulted in severe water crisis for the community. Due to the large population of the community huge parts were without clean drinking water. Quarrels and scuffles were frequent at the few available water sources of the community. This water project will benefit about 300 people that live around this water source.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
