Chimpanzee populations in Africa are on the decline. As human populations continue to grow at an alarming rate, chimpanzee and human lives can become interspersed, and conflict between chimps and humans are commonplace. Local farmers live in poverty, and rely on plant crops and timber to raise minimal income. As a result, years of deforestation throughout the Bulindi region was so extensive that the survival of the region’s 300 wild chimpanzees was under immediate threat.
DROP4DROP has worked with the Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project with the aim to simultaneously conserve the chimpanzee habitat and population as well as provide local communities with sustainable access to clean water, reducing the negative interactions between humans and primates.
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
