Nawango 3, Mpigi District, Uganda

“It was like a dream to us,” say Monica. She says the people in her community never thought they would have safe water. “We used to wake up very early in the morning to go fetch water,” Monica says. Her and others in her community of Nawango 3 village would lose hours each day walking to fetch water for the day’s tasks. “The water was from a pond and there were a lot of diseases caused by using this dirty water, such as typhoid,” Monica says. “Many children suffered from diarrhoea.” Sometimes Monica would walk beyond the pond to a neighbouring community to get water, but the walk was an hour and then she spent an hour and a half waiting in line at the near by well in the next village. “When the Drop4Drop team came to tell us about the proposed water project, we didn’t believe it would happen – until we saw people actually starting construction of the well.” Monica says. “Now we have clean safe water in our community. Whenever a community receives access to water, everything changes”. Like in Monica’s village the general health situation improved, time is saved etc due to availability of clean safe water.

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
