Hai Peace, Yei River State, South Sudan
Kindly Donated During The DROP4DROP X ED SHEERAN Campaign
The community of Hai Peace had previously been enduring the community water well that was reported by member Emmanuel Lemi Martin to contain tiny black worms as well as the water turning a brown colour when filled in jerry cans and being extremely difficult to pump. This was arguably the root cause of Typhoid in the area and the main reason why community members regularly become sick. In addition, similarly to many other contaminated water sources, the complete recovery from any water-related disease is never achieved because of the continuous drinking and reliance on the specific well.
Repairing this water source is vital for all members of the community, especially women who daily use this water for bathing, drinking, cooking and washing for themselves and their children. With this project completion, water-related illnesses will be minimised and overall health of the 100 households located in Hai Peace will be dramatically improved.
Madam Evana, a committee member and midwife in Yei State Hospital, located 2km from the aforementioned bore-well, has promised to clean the repaired water source everyday and urges the committee to collect fees from all households per month to uphold consistent maintenance of the well, to ensure it doesn’t fall into disrepair.
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
