Fufo Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia
With love from Coby, aged four and a half
“Fufo is a remote village situated off the Mandinba–Selety road via Giboro. It is predominantly inhabited by the Manjago ethnic group, whose ancestors migrated from Guinea-Bissau and settled in the area generations ago. The community remains largely marginalized, with limited access to basic social amenities. The people of Fufo primarily engage in subsistence farming, cultivating groundnuts and cashew as their main crops. Each year, cashew nuts are harvested, locally processed, and sold in the Brikama market. Income generated from these sales is used to sustain households and support children’s education. Despite their resilience and industriousness, the community faces a severe challenge in accessing clean drinking water. The existing well, which serves as the main water source, is insufficient to meet the needs of the growing population. As a result, residents especially women and children struggle daily to obtain adequate water for domestic use, leading to increased hardship and potential health risks.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
