Amdalai Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia

“This village is located along the Trans-Gambia south bank road about 14km from the regional town of Brikama. The community was founded by a World War 2 veteran called Ousfa Sambou about 65 years ago. After returning from the war in Burma (Myanmar) under the Royal West African Frontier Force, and learning from the horrors of war, he decided to call the newly found village “amdalai” meaning peacefulness. The village now boasts of about 600 inhabitants most of whom migrated from the hinterland and neighboring countries like Guinea Bissau and Senegal. The community is one of the most ethnically diverse within the region. It is inhabited by the Wollof, Mandinka, Jola, Sarahule, Fula and Manjago tribes. They all live peacefully and harmoniously. The community is a farming community growing maize, watermelon and assorted vegetables. Women also engage in collecting traditional wild tea called Kinkiliba, MborrMborr among others for sale at the local markets thereby earning some income for household activities as well as sending their children to school. However, the community has suffered from water shortage partly due to the migration of people towards the community. Also, the Cassamnance conflict refugee crisis made it worse. The current water source is not enough for the community. This has devastating consequences for the community as they spent ample time of hours in water collection. This situation has the potential to cause defragmentation to the already existing harmony among the tribes within the community.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
