Mozambique is an East African country of 27 million people, known for its beautiful coastline and swaying palm trees. However, Mozambique also has one of the lowest rates of water and sanitation coverage in sub-Saharan Africa. Around 60% of rural communities do not have access to clean water. Poverty levels are high and sustainable water sources scarce. Communities often lack the knowledge to maintain wells, leading them to fall into disrepair. Drop4drop have undertaken an extensive restoration scheme, fixing broken bore-wells and empowering communities to manage and maintain their projects locally and effectively. Providing clean water sources in rural Mozambique improves locals’ health and lays a foundation to sustainable development and a brighter future.
“Without enough water, I had to let go of some important hygiene behaviours like bathing and washing my hands regularly. Since this well was restored I can properly take care of myself and work to stay healthy. I feel alleviated and everything is back to normal. I enjoy the clean water. Thank you for giving it to us.” – Olinda Jose
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
