Kafuta Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia

“Kafuta is located along the Trans-Gambia south bank road about 21 km from the regional town of Brikama. It is one of the largest communities within Kombo East district with a population of about 5,000 people. The community is largely dominated by the Mandinaka tribe. Agriculture once dominated lives of people in Kafuta who depended on farming for their livelihoods and sustenance. The community once enjoyed abundant harvest of vegetables and cashew nuts. But of late the community suffers from land grabbing and erosions with other environmental degradation. Some parts of the community have severe water shortages. The community’s expansion and massive in flock of refugees last year from the Cassamance conflict has made the water crisis worst.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
