Geer Village, Warap State, South Sudan

“My name is Abak Awan Madut. I am a 33-year-old mother of four children residing in Geer village. I am very happy that the Geer borehole with GPS coordinates 8.540922, 28.480132 has finally been repaired today after ten months of its breakdown. We have been taking hand-dug well water for the last six months, from April to October 2022. However, from November 2022 to yesterday, the hand-dug well dried up, and we started using the neighboring well of Mantang, which is one hour away from our village here. We drastically suffered from walking long distances and queuing at the well because it’s always congested. We always arrived late and couldn’t get the first chance to take water. We underwent worse life experiences to the extent that we didn’t bathe for two to three days due to lack of water, and others spent a day without food simply because of the same case of water. It’s a wonderful moment today that the cylinder of our well is fixed, and the leaked pipe is changed by WESI technicians, which has made this well resume its normal function of bringing clean water. We hope this will end bad life experiences in searching for clean drinking since we have exchanged contacts with technicians to intervene whenever necessary.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
