Faraba Sutu Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia

“This community is located along the Trans-Gambia south bank road about 3 km west of Kafuta. It is a community of about 800 people. The community includes the Jola and Mandinka tribes. It is well known for weaving basket and other traditional artifacts especially among women. Sustenance farming remains to be the dominant income for the community growing maize, groundnut and watermelon. Although of late the community starts growing vegetables to sell in the urban markets like Serekunda and Banjul. The community is grappled with inadequate water for its population as the current water source is not enough thus resulting into water shortage. This has consequences socially and economically even within households’ level.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
