Tomasi, Mzimba, Malawi

“We had a good time with the people of Tomasi village. As we were installing the pump everyone was happy because women never thought that they can have a pump in their village. It is sad to see that people still get water from streams which are not safe. While there, we found some of them sick with diarrhoea. The village has a lot of people and most of them are poor. They depend on farming. Some men have gone to South Africa for greener pastures. The other problems besides water are that the hospital is very far from the village and due to wanton cutting down of trees in the area, women walk long distances to fetch firewood.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
