Sotokoi Village, Niamina East District, The Gambia

“Sotokoi Village is located along the Trans-Gambia South Bank Road about 7km west of Kudang. It is a Mandinka tribe community. The community is a subsistence farming community growing groundnut, millet and corn. The community is having water shortages due to its size and a very limited water source. Those on the outskirts of the village are often without water making them more vulnerable to open wells and other contaminated waterborne diseases. Although a decade long, land dispute between Sotokoi and Njie Kunda Village has been settled. The effects of the water shortage still linger in the community as they find it reluctant to travel to neighboring Njie Kunda village seeking for water. This source of clean water that has been provided, is life changing for the community members.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
