Bateling Village, Kiang West District, The Gambia

“Bateling Village is a community of 350 people, located in Kiang West District, in The Gambia. This community were previously struggling without access to a safe, clean water source. This village is located about 5km off the Trans-Gambia south Bank Road via Dumbuto. The community is primarily made up of the Mandika tribe. The Village is historic, dating back hundreds of years ago. The settlers of the village were descendants of Manding Royals in the Mali empire of 12th Century Sundiata Keita. They are known as ‘Sibikarang Mansa’. The village is also home to a small group of Fula herdsmen. The community is a subsistence farming community, and the population of the community is far larger than the water sources available. As a result, it leads to water scarcity.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
