“My name is Aluth Mawien Mayen. I am a girl, and I am 12 years old. I am in primary four at Achuan Tiit primary school. Today, I am glad to witness our well being repaired. The breakage of our well has taken precisely one year now, and throughout this period, life has not been easy for us here in Achuan Tiit. Since our well got broken, we were left without clean drinking water and had to go to a nearby community called Achuan Ngap to fetch water. From our village to Achuan Ngap is a 25-minute walk. When we went there, people from that village quarrelled with us and accused us that we intended to come and break their well just like ours. Sometimes, they prevented us from getting water and warned us not to go to their well. When they collected money, they overcharged us and threatened that if we didn’t pay that amount, they would never allow us to get water from their well again. Some of our community members stopped going there again to get water but instead decided to get water from nearby ponds, which are not clean. So, today is my moment of happiness that our well is functioning again and providing us with clean drinking water. Thanks to the technicians who repaired this, and many thanks to WESI for helping us to fix our well again.”
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
