Mhawi Shawa, Mzimba
With Special Thanks to Freya Lundgren
The people here are very cheerful and warmly welcome the drop4drop programme in the village. The people of Mhawi Shawa depend on farming and mainly grow tobacco. Due to the planting of tobacco, they were cutting trees and more areas were being left bare. With their new water supply they plan to plant trees and are very thankful for the seeds and access to clean water.
Malawi’s economy predominately relies on agriculture, with the trade of agricultural goods being the only source of income for many households across all regions of the country. Not only do the sustainable water sources provide clean drinking water for the entire community, but they also benefit local agricultural projects, allowing for a continued supply of produce throughout the dry season.
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
