“My name is Adeng Mathiang. I’m 45 years old. I’m married to my lovely husband, Athuai Anei. We have six kids, three boys, and three girls. We managed to send one girl and one boy to school to improve our lives later on. Now, our lives are getting worse and worse because we are all illiterate. My husband and I are not enjoying a good life because being illiterate means we can’t enjoy life to the fullest. We all know how important water is to all living things on earth. Water can generate everything on earth. We suffer when our well breaks because we have nothing to do for a living. All the kids suffer because when there’s no water, there’s very little cooking both days and nights. Water collected from neighboring wells and ponds is not enough at home for drinking, bathing, cooking, washing utensils, and clothes. Here, we have our gardens, where we plant different crops to support our lives, such as tomatoes, okra, tobacco eggplants, etc. However, when our well broke, all our crops dried up due to a lack of water to irrigate them. Now, we are excited because the team quickly rescued us. We do not have to go far to collect water from neighboring wells and ponds. We resumed our gardens to plant our crops to help ourselves by earning a lot of money. We use that money to register our children’s names in school and also buy some food and non-food items.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
