Yiribaya Village, Upper Badibu District, The Gambia

“This community is located about 1km North of Minteh Kunda Junction along the Trans-Gambia North Bank Road. It is a nomadic Fula tribe community and a subsistence farming type with a population of about 350 people.  Many girls are now attending school from the community. The community has severe water shortage as the one single water source cannot serve the population of the village. This has catastrophic consequences for the community. People search for water especially when the current water source runs dry. They usually travel across the Senegal border further north about 4 kilometers out to fetch water using donkey carts. This has devastating consequences for their families and it also has the risk of disrupting the gains made in girls’ education because most of the times women and girls go out searching for water while the men work on the fields and look after the domestic animals. This water source has provided a safe, clean source for the entire community.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
