Roff Village, Mbour, Thies Region, Senegal

‘ROFF VILLAGE is situated about 9 kilometers off the Mbour/Joal Road. It is a Serere tribe community. The community depends on subsistence farming growing millet and groundnut, while some depend on manual laborer jobs in the town of Mbour. The community suffers from access to clean drinking water and are highly marginalized. The head of the village Pierre Ngum said they depend on one open well for the entire village all year round. Water related illnesses are very common especially in the rainy season due to contamination from the open well. We are very grateful for this water project now we can stay healthy and live happily. Thanks to this project our women and children can stay well and be happy instead of doing water collection miles away. We are grateful and thankful for this project he said. Marie Ngum a women leader of the village also expressed her gratitude for this project. She promised the newly formed water management committee will make sure the water source is protected and very well taken care of.’

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
