Narrow Gate Demonstration, Yei River State, South Sudan

“61 year old Simon Nyarena is an IDP from Narrow Gate Demonstration area, 2.5 miles on Yei Maridi road. He fled to TTC due to insecurity surrounding Yei Town in 2016. Mr.Simon is currently a farmer, but before the conflict, he worked as a mansion. Simon shared that water was a problem at TTC as people would go to open water sources that were highly contaminated during the rainy season. He and his family, as well as many in the community, suffered from severe stomach problems due to typhoid and other diseases caused by drinking dirty water. He said it’s easy to fall sick and to recover from the sickness incurs many expenses. “Accessing clean water will surely prevent diseases,” Simon stated.

As a former IDP, Mr. Nyarena is cultivating crops in his area while drinking from this water source. To do so, he carries two jerrycans to home, which is a very short distance from the well. He is relieved to have access to clean water for drinking and for watering crops. Simon is happy that many of his neighbours are returning to Narrow Gate Community and is sure more will return once the word spreads that their well has been repaired.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
