Kantong Kunda, Kiang West District, The Gambia

Kantong Kunda has long suffered from severe water shortages. Now that the twin handpumps have been repaired, the community has enough clean water. “I had to stop bathing and washing my hands regularly. Now I can properly take care of myself. I feel extremely relieved as a parent of six children; my kids can have clean water to drink,” said Binta Ceesay. Modou Kanyi expressed delight with the project’s completion, especially the water trough for livestock. “We travel a long distance to collect water, which is exhausting and it makes us to perform less work on our farms,” he said. He encouraged women to use the excess water for home vegetable gardening for household food security and enriched nutrition. The Village Head said he can breath fresh air again. “I had sleepless nights over how my people can have clean drinking water. But you angels arrived to save us,” he said.

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
