Jigomoni 2, Yei River State, South Sudan

Because of the understandable insecurity during the South Sudanese Civil war (2017-2018) and Comprehensive Peace Agreement, community members in Jigomoni wouldn’t go far to look for water during these times. Therefore, when their local well was broken, they had to settle for nearby watering holes that were dirty and riddled with disease. These diseases not only prevent families from earning income and opportunities for employment but also prohibit children from gaining an education.

With the partnerships between Water is Basic and Drop4Drop, The Pump handle, GI pipes and cracked foundation were all repaired at this well and soon after opened once more for the community members to access. While there are currently 43 families living in this community, many are returning to the area following the peace agreement to rejoin their local community once more. In addition, a new committee is currently being established to oversee monthly water collection fees and borehole usage. Considering many of the 43 families alongside most of South Sudan suffered some form of trauma in the previous two years, clean water will allow these families time and space to rebuild their lives and pay attention to each other’s needs beyond the basics of fetching clean water.

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
