Basori Village, Kombo East District, The Gambia

“Basori is one of the ancient communities within the Kombo East District with an estimated population of about 300 people. It is located about 8km South East of Brikama. It ranks equal to the migrated Bojang communities of Kafuta, Brikama and Manduar. It holds high cultural and historical significance of The Kingdom of Kombo in the old days. It is a Mandinka dominated community with some Fula and Jola tribes in the mix. The community lives harmoniously with inter marriages among tribes. The community hosted a huge influx of refugees fleeing the Guinea-Bissau conflict during the seventies and eighties. As a result, it has huge Guinea-Bissau influence. It recently also hosted some refugees fleeing the Cassamance conflict in the southern region of Senegal. It is a subsistence farming community mainly growing maize and cashew nuts. The community has severe water shortage as its population couldn’t cope with the previous water sources. This had resulted to people using open wells which causes health hazards.”

This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
