“My name is Achol Majok Nang. I am a 41-year-old mother of eight children. Three kids are in school, while five assist me in cultivating food crops for our living. I am also the mother of a young pump mechanic called Mark Majok Garang, trained by WESI and deployed under the Panachier team with Martha Awut as his teammate. Jarmou borehole is the water source we have been accessing clean drinking water since 2011 when Rural Water and Cooperative Development in Warrap State installed it. The borehole developed friction from the handle in May 2022, which goes against the head assembly side by side, and it became very serious in January 2023. I initiated a call to conduct a meeting to contribute fees, but almost everyone turned deaf ears to the program. Nobody agrees to contribute. We, therefore, put aside this rejected idea and continue with our deteriorating borehole. On 14th – April – 2023, the borehole stopped working. The thirstiness struck us, and that was how everyone realized the bitterness of our negligence and ignorance. I hurriedly called the elders and mechanics to seek emergency solutions where three elders cleared both labor and head assembly fees which marked an easy repair of installing the head assembly in less than 20 minutes. The community was very happy and resumed drinking at Jarmou water point.”
This project was undertaken as part of our campaign of projects that actively reduce carbon emissions. This project helped the community save their much needed wood which was previously being burnt daily to boil water. This project has also eliminated the many thousands of hours previously spent on walking to collect water.
